The student of American culture recognizes that a sure harbinger of autumn is the arrival of the
Ruby-jacketed Hunter Americanus, usually seen accompanied by two four-legged species, the
Loyal Houndis, (always in a pack), and the Galloping Equus. These are most
often found ranging across the countryside in pursuit of their natural quarry, the Busy-tailed
Red Fox'em. The perceptive observer realizes that the real pursuit for the Hunter Americanus is
a good time, which it always manages to bag.
In the world of one observer of the American scene, artist Charles Wysocki, such odds as horse, hound and hunter vs. a single
fox are just about even. Or should be. The hunters can have their day in the country and all the fun they
want, and the foxy fox will outfox them all. As the artist says, "I put the fox in a position to
give his chasers the slip...here was one fox that god away without a scratch."
When the Master of Americana applies his powers of observation to the traditional fox hunt,
wonderful things happen.
