Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." Then Herod sent them to Bethlehem saying, "Go search carefully for the young Child, and when you find Him, bring back word to me that I may come to worship Him also." So they departed and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, until it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with His mother Mary and fell down and worshiped Him. They presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

flight to Egypt

When the wise men departed, an angel of the Lord told Joseph in a dream to take baby Jesus and His mother and flee to Egypt for King Herod sought to kill the young Child.

When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead." So Joseph departed with his family, and they dwelt in the city of Nazareth.

carpenter

As a youth growing up in Nazareth, Jesus worked as a carpenter and helped out his father, Joseph.

Jewish teachers When Jesus was 12 years old, He and His parents went down to Jerusalem to attend the Feast of the Passover. When the celebration was over, they could not find Jesus. After 3 days of searching for Him, Jesus' parents found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

When Jesus was 30 years of age, John the Baptist began preaching repentance and baptizing people in the wilderness of Judea. John wore clothes of camel's hair and a leather girdle around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. One day, Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John. And when he was baptized, the heavens opened and the Spirit of God descended like a dove. A voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
