Cottages of Carmel collection, is just such a
collaboration between the real world and
myself. Like all my Carmel cottages, this is
a real hideaway along the picturesque
Pacific coast. The rich, honey-colored stone
is marvelous; its precise hue is an effect of
wind and weather on rock; I could not hope
to improve on it.
"The splendid hollyhocks, that rise as proud
and straight as sentinels at the entrance to
the garden, are my imaginative addition to
the scene. Hollyhocks are such dignified
flowers; I think of these as heralds
announcing my own arrival.
"The special radiance of morning light in the
spray-drenched air is, of course, an
expression of God's artistry and nature. But
I've worked so hard to master the luminous
effect that I like to think of this golden
morning light as something from my own
