Print Description:
Wall Street depicts businessmen walking with umbrellas and riding in horse carriages on a rainy day in front of the New York Stock Exchange.

"This nation was founded on faith: faith in the freedom of democracy, faith in the economic philosophy of capitalism, and faith in God. All three elements appear in this painting of Wall Street which was painted in banker's blues and grays.

"Even back in the Golden Era, Wall Street was a narrow valley sided by tall, mountain-like buildings. I've shown it at the close of a business day, with brokers and business people leaving the stock exchanges, hurrying past newsboys peddling the Wall Street Journal and the stately stairs and columns of the Sub-treasury Building. The composition for this could have been rather hard and geometric without the addition of the American flags. Their bright colors and languid shapes wafting in the updrafts helped soften the scene as well as add a note of patriotism to it.

"That's the English Gothic spire of Trinity Church rising up at the end of the Wall Street corridor. Trinity was the first Episcopal Church in the U.S., and was chartered in 1697. It was burnt twice and rebuilt each time – a testament to the faith in God of its parishioners. In the churchyard cemetery, reminders of the American Revolution remain, like the headstone of Alexander Hamilton who was our first Secretary of the Treasury. "If I had been born in a big city, perhaps I wouldn't find a place as staid as Wall Street so appealing. But in having visited many of our nation's great centers over the past fifteen years, I've discovered that they have their romantic sides – which are perfect locations for showing America during the Golden Era of transition and the celebration of light."
