Print Description:

This image depicts a New York City wintry scene on Wall Street at the turn of the 20th century.

Harvey stood on the south side of Wall Street, between William and Broad, just east of Federal Hall with its distinctive statue of George Washington on the steps. The New York Stock Exchange is down the street to the left, just past the American flags on the left side of the painting. This is about a 10 minute walk from Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan. What's unique about the painting is Harvey didn't paint the New York Stock Exchange Building, which has a very identifiable stone design. That building was completed in 1903, so presumably the building he painted (behind the flags and to the left of the church spire) is the building that stood there prior to 1901, when the NYSE Building was started.
