"I am grateful for a childhood home that
fostered a love of books. The memory of
Mother reading from that set of red-bound
adventure stories is vivid yet; my older
brother and I becoming deeply involved in
the life of the imagination. The illustrations
were intensely exciting to me, and some of
them still come to mind. No doubt they
contributed to my eventual decision to
become an artist. At that stage, I never
noticed the name of the illustrator, but I
now think it likely that they were the work
of N.C. Wyeth, a powerful influence in
American illustration.
