"Each year, spring on the ranch is a wonderful panorama of rebirth. The disappearance of adult cottontails
is a clue that the important business of starting new families is at hand and that new babies, like the ones in
this painting, will soon emerge.
In the meantime, there are other manifestations of life's annual renewal. The furry blossoms of the pasqueflowers,
not only pleasing to the eye but also wonderful to the touch, are one of the first flowers to appear. The
gooseberry and fuzzy mullein cautiously send out tender green leaves. Even the soil itself, soft from the
melting snow, smells different somehow. Overhead, red-winged blackbirds might add a flash of red to the still
muted landscape, and the yellow warblers sing arpeggios in the greening stems of the willows.
When the baby cottontails find their way into this scene, they seem vulnerable and innocent, hardly ready
for the trials of this world. But through instinct, surprising speed, and vast numbers, they reaffirm their
place each year as one of the most familiar signs of spring."
