"My inspiration for Sled Dogs came from a wonderful old sled that belongs to a friend of mine. I knew that I wanted
to paint some yellow Labrador puppies, but I wanted to do something other than a scene with duck decoys - a standare
prop for hunting dogs. I also wanted to avoid something that is easy to do when painting baby animals, namely,
making the painting too cute.
Once the pose was established, the challenge of this painting came frome a choice of colors. I often like to
employ a primary red, yellow, and blue color scheme, however, the shadows on the puppies presented a problem.
At first I tried adding blue, but that turned the shadows green - not realistic. When I made the shadows brown, the
puppies looked dingy. Finally, I tried lavendar, and the result was most appealing because it made the puppies
look light and luminous, capturing the reality of the scene."
