Print Description:
|
"Red-twigged dogwoods grow wild along our creek, and a few large specimens were planted next to our house many
years ago. This year they were particularly beautiful. Because the frost came late, it allowed the leaves to turn
a wide range of colors - from a pale golden cream to the deepest red, to a subtle, fading green. For about ten
days the red twigs were a feast for the eyes. Then, finally, the frost blended all the colors to a neutral,
burnished gray.
Cottontails, on the other hand, seem to be no particular color at first glance, allowing them to blend into
almost any background. Closer scrutiny, however, reveals that there are many delicately blended colors. Their
backs and heads are a combination of black and white hairs; necks, elbows, and flanks are pale gold; and the back
of their necks are a rich, raw sienna.
In blending these elements, I hope to capture the feeling of one of the last
warm days of fall."
