Characteristic of James Christensen's work, these two paintings
are rich in symbolism and ornate detail. The artist communicates a warm and wise statement about the inherent
worth of all people, the wealthy as well as the poor. The woman on the left, clad in luxurious fabrics and
adorned by jewels, holds a strawberry plant which symbolizes the good
works of a righteous person. Notice that the fruit itself is not quite ripe as her gifts to the world
have not yet been fully realized.
More humbly attired, her sister holds a little white violet, a symbol of humility. Latin words in gold lettering
spell out faith, hope, and charity above the flowers. The rich sister can offer charity, the poor one, faith and
hope. Christensen's eloquent message is that every one of us, regardless of our specific
circumstances, have a worthy contribution to make to our world. These are gifts of the spirit. |
