Print Description:
"Greatness. The very word sounds good. There isn't a parent who doesn't want greatness for his or her child. Where most of us part company is over the way to achieve greatness. If you asked any modern child to name a great person, he would, more than likely, name a famous athlete, movie star or rock musician---at least someone in the public eye. Let's face it, that's what most of us think of as great. Yet we who are called by Christ's name ought to use His definition of greatness. He said a person who chooses to serve is great. Yes, you heard it correctly -- serve. How many parents, this evening, will sit around a table and impart that philosophy to their children? I dare say, not many. In the competitive environment of our world, should we encourage our children to become servants? After all, what if they get taken for granted? These questions were answered by the greatest of all. He said servanthood is the path to greatness. Listen to this. 'If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, the servant of all' (Mark 9:35 NIV) It would help us if we realized that greatness is in the hand of God. He distributes it as He thinks fit. We must only position ourselves to receive it by obedience. Then we relax and watch the blessing of God pour out on that servant's life.

"I couldn't think of a more dramatic way of showing the opposite of greatness than a businessman, in his office, surrounded by the trappings of 'success'. Surely he's got it made. He's arrived! Not quite. When Christ comes into view, He again demonstrates the servant's posture, to the chagrin and humiliation of the man. Just as He did to His own disciples, Christ reminds us of what a great person looks like. Will we follow?

"A footnote: When this painting was unveiled at a convention sometime ago, I was surprised by the comments of those passing by. Many Pastors walked by with a spouse or friend and whispered, "Look, there's a Pastor in the chair, with Christ washing his feet!" How interesting. They were applying it personally! As always, God did more with the painting that I expected."
