"This painting is a memento of 14 happy years living in a house on this hill in
Santa Barbara. I am very attached to my memories of living there and of the view of
the roses. This painting posed an intriguing problem as the roses and the surrounding
view draw the focus away from one another. The garden required constant care and took me
away from my painting, but I miss it."
