"I think landscape paintings are fueled by a combination of emotion and intellect. Formal
design combines with intuitive feeling - abstract intellectual choices about art made
with a background of years of visual memories and emotions.
In Rainbow Falls,
the Art and Design elements are: Making use of strong horizontals and
verticals, developing a high-contrast value system, designing an inverted 'V' (the
mist and tree line) to counteract the 'V' of the waterfall, guiding the viewer's eye
to the center of the painting and to the deer.
The emotional content? Always more exciting! Remembering a lifetime of fishing and
hiking trips and camping out, pressing against damp and mossy rocks to get a drink
of cold water, how the spray and sun almost always made a rainbow, as a child, crouched
in a cool grotto by a waterfall, trying to stick a fishing worm in just the right pool.
I decided to add the rainbow in this watercolor because it was true."
