John Singleton Mosby, a young lawyer,
became the most famous of the "Partisan
Rangers" or "Confederate Guerrillas" in the
Civil War. Mosby joined the Confederate
Army as a private under General Stuart and
by February of 1863 his special orders were
to operate inside the enemy lines with only
nine men. In this situation, their rations,
clothing, and equipment supplies were no
longer guaranteed. They were cut off from
friendly forces and were on guard 24 hours
