Mosby's bravery, convictions, and military
shrewdness held up to the challenge of this
special assignment, and he was promoted to
Captain and then Colonel. By the close of
the war, he commanded nearly six hundred
men, though many of these troops were
ravaged by war. In his territory around
Washington, D.C. — known as Mosby's
Confederacy — he alone made and enforced
law during the war.
Mosby expected complete loyalty and
obedience to his commands — and received
it. His men knew he never asked for
anything he would not do himself. They
never kept camp but rather split up at night
and stayed with various Southern
sympathizers at "safe houses."
The Gray Ghost of the Confederacy was
one of the greatest heroes of the South,
and one of the most notorious scoundrels of
the North. Union generals so feared him that
General Grant ordered his men hanged
without trial. This scene may depict Mosby
and his raiders leaving a safe house on their
way to capture a Union General as he did on
March 8, 1963, or to disrupt and capture
300 of Sheridan's army as occurred on
August 13, 1864. [go back]
