"The quiet beauty of things humble.
That's been the focus of much of my art. And yet, though I love the tumbledown
charm of cottages and county places, I'm also drawn to the more formal beauty
of the truly grand estates, whose substantial houses are triumphs of world architecture.
I've long wanted to balance my artistic account by celebrating
some of these great palatial estates, starting with those located
in our own country. Hence Homestead House, first in my Great American
Mansion series. Nanette and I recently toured the deep South, seeking
examples of the grand plantation style. Homestead House, with its stately
Doric columns and imposing facade, framed by lavish magnolias and live
oaks hung heavy with Spanish moss, is the very essence of what we found.
Her is an estate that would have delighted Scarlett O'Hara and
Rhett Butler; indeed, if you look closely, you'll find some familiar
initials carved into a tree.
America's great mansions. Very few of us will ever be privileged
to live in them. But I invite you to enjoy their sublime beauty
in my new series of paintings. By the way, keep an eye out for the
second painting in my Great American Mansions series, due out
sometime next year: the spectacular 'Biltmore House'."
