"We couldn't have known how romantic it really was, or
how much we would cherish the memories, when Nanette and I
began our tradition of taking long, moonlit walks.
Twenty years later, we still love to walk hand-in hand in the moonlight.
In fact, I believe that the only place I cherish where we've never had a
chance to stroll under the stars is England, possibly because moonlight is
rare in that land of mist and rain. Hence Moonlight Lane
- our
long-overdue romantic walk through the English countryside.
For a painter, of course, moonlight, with its dramatic moods and
colorations, its rich, transparent shadows, its warm lemon-yellow
highlights, is a challenge and a delight. In this painting I was
particularly pleased with the way reflections of moonlight and of
the illuminated cottage interior mingle in the puddles. Indeed,
I'm so intrigued by the idyllic aura of Moonlight Lane
that I
intend to follow it in future paintings, much as I have with the
'Lamplight Lane' series.
Above all, moonlight is romantic. And yes, the half-hidden couple
strolling in the shadows is Nanette and me."
