Charles Wysocki gives this rendition of his latest work: "When the Chickadees got together
in this leisure time spent among friends, it was welcome respite from home chores and, in
most cases, motherly duties. The encumbering clothes they wore on the tennis courts did not
permit any strenuous action. Looking at the early pictures of the seemingly easy manner
in which the ladies at the turn of the century played tennis, I've always marvelled at their
dexterity. Wearing those long skirts, I would guess it would hamper their style. The times
then were gentle, refined, and somewhat restrained, as reflected in their practiced, polite
mannerisms. Their slower, graceful moves displayed an elegant femininity that added a pleasant polish
to their demeanor on and off the courts."
"Country House Tennis, as in this relaxed ladies club around the early 1900's, was considered a special
social event and a pleasing way to undertake some not-too-strenuous exercise. I delighted in
taking liberties with designing and painting this sporting mixture of personalities in different
dress, enjoying tea with friends in such a flower-filled setting on this cheerful summer day."
