"Once, several years ago, as my wife and I were walking through
a parking lot, our three-year-old son Warren decided to blaze several
steps ahead of us. Within seconds, my worst nightmare was unfolding before
my eyes. As he was running full steam ahead between the parked cars (he
was too little to see over), I saw he was on a collision course with a car
that was in an obvious hurry. My heart stopped. I watched as Warren ran
right to the edge of that inevitable disaster with all of his momentum
pointing forward. What happened next has forever convinced us of the
truth that we are never alone. As though a giant hand had formed a wall
between Warren and certain disaster, he not only stopped, but actually
bounced backwards! I didn’t see any of God’s angels, just the result of their
presence. He was living proof of Psalm 34:7, which says, 'The angel of
the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.'
"This painting dramatically visualizes what we should expect based on the promise
of God. The boy is making his way home from school, possibly through that shortcut
that he knows better than to take. It’s late in the day, and the sun is beginning to
fade. There may be danger even though he is unaware. Look closely at the right side
of the image to see the mighty angel that God has assigned to him, which is more than
