Dean Mitchell is one of today's most important artists, and Rowena is one of his most popular and successful paintings. For this painting, Mitchell was one of the six finalists for the 1990 Hubbard Art Award for Excellence, and he was the youngest artist so honored that year.
More importantly, Rowena honors those is a prime example of Mitchell's ability to convey emotion through his work. To Mitchell, however, Rowena is most importantly his homage to a wonderful person. "A friend of mine who attended her church introduced me to Rowena Highbaugh," he says. She's 94 now. She reminded me very much of my grandmother. It was the way she talked about children, and the way she talked about religion and God. She has an unconditional love for people, and I wanted to capture the religious aura and spirituality of her."
The Hubbard Award Committee agrees that Mitchell has accomplished that feat. This young artist, who has already won more than 200 awards for his ability to show a special side of the seemingly ordinary, communicates Rowena's love for others, and his love for her, with power and elegant simplicity. "My work is not about color," he says. "It's about life."
Dean Mitchell knows about both life and art. He is most interested in meeting new people and discovering new things. "Once you get to know your subjects and become familiar with their experiences and surroundings, you can develop a love which comes through your work," he says. "It also determines how you will portray your subject. That is really important. I believe that paintings can live in a certain way. In the end, you hope you can do something that will help people come together. The emotions are universal, not matter what the color of the skin." |
