"Answer me when I call to you, oh my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress. Be
merciful to me and hear my prayer."
.................................................-- Psalms 4:1
Dean Mitchell is considered one of today's finest artists because of the emotional power he is able to convey through his paintings. This ability has helped him win more than 200 awards for his work. Psalms 4:1, though, was never given the opportunity to be so lauded. This image was so important and meaningful to him that he never submitted it to an art show. "At the time I finished this painting, I was having some serious personal and professional problems," Mitchell reveals. "It was probably the turning point of my life and career."
Although his problems at the time were complex, Mitchell's choice was essentially simple. He could have either given in to depression or sought relief from despair by dedicating himself to fine art. Thankfully, he chose the latter.
"I believe that God gave me this talent for a reason, so I decided that my art should mean something," Mitchell explains. "I wanted to have a spiritual meaning and to bring people together." Committing himself to this important goal, he painted a praying woman with elegant simplicity, subtlety, and emotional power. His inspiration was intense, and his technique was excellent.
"The layers of oil paint are thinly applied," he says. "I made it very earthly in feeling, particularly the background. I suppose you can consider that symbolism for the Earth. I deliberately made the effect very subdued and placed the figure right in the center, so nothing would distract from the simplicity of the statement. This painting is about submerging yourself in God's love."
It is virtually impossible to look at Dean Mitchell's work without feeling his emotion. Like Rowena, his first limited edition print for the Greenwich Workshop, Psalms 4:1 has meaning for each person who views it, time and time again. |
