A daughter, waiting to welcome
you home. A son, presenting you with a handpicked bouquet of wildflowers. A granddaughter, lying on your couch,
captivated by a favorite fairy tale. These are the personal yet timeless and universal "memories of the heart"
that Jean Monti captures in her realistic paintings which celebrate the joys of childhood and family.
Jean's signature subject matter was inspired by growing up in a loving family of six
children in North Providence, Rhode Island, where she still makes her home. Her style including her exquisite use of light
was developed while attending the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design.
Upon graduating from Rhode Island School of Design, she began a successful freelance career, with more than 70 book
covers to her credit. After becoming a mother, Jean put behind her career as a commercial artist and embarked on her successful career
as a fine artist.
Jean Monti paints splendid scenes realistically and with sensitivity, beginning with the design. "I
do a preliminary wash in burnt sienna, rather than doing a pencil drawing. Pencil is dark, and at that
stage I don't need the detail," she explains. "With a wash I can establish an atmosphere, almost like
a monochromatic watercolor painting." Alternating between acrylics and oils, Monti renders exquisite
laces and luminous skin tones with meticulous detail. Most of the gowns worn by the models in Monti's
paintings are each painstakingly sewn by her mother.
In all of her paintings, Monti seeks to evoke an emotional response. "I try to create idealistic settings
that are romantic and pure. My work is an extension of myself - a legacy to my children and family.
My mission is to share my work - to have people see it and to make them feel great. I want to touch viewers in a way
that makes them remember beautiful, special moments and to connect with the love, joy,
and innocence that is part of being a child or being around children." |
