The Call of the Four Fishermen
is one work of art out of fifty-four drawings and paintings by Robert Doares
that comprise the Immanuel, God With Us series of fine art, published in book form by Crossway Books.
This collective work is a most extraordinary accomplishment that depicts different scenes from the life of
Christ. The intricate detail, the panoramic vistas, the depth of expression, the biblical reality are characteristic
of the incredible style that Mr. Doares has brought to the world of religious art.
Robert Doares studied at the Grand Central School of Art and enjoyed a successful career as a freelance
illustrator. Then, as a result of his devotion to Christ, in 1978 Mr. Doares left the commercial field, and
devoted his artistic talent to the completion of the Immanuel Series, which he had begun in 1969. He has just
finished the fifty-four piece series in the last few years. As he explains it, "My original plan was to paint
all the scenes in color; but since time was running out, I decided to keep them as pencil drawings -- except
for the four I had already painted."
During the creation of the Immanuel Art Collection, Mr. Doares made many trips to the Library of Congress and
to Israel, including numerous photographic excursions, contacts with archaeologists in the field, and research
in Greek dictionaries and other sources. Whenever the available information from these sources conflicted with
the biblical narrative, the Bible was the authority he followed. The collection has been on exhibit at various
locations, including the Billy Graham Center Museum in Wheaton, Illinois and The Waterworks Visual Arts Center
in Salisbury, North Carolina.
The Call of the Four Fishermen
was drawn from the perspective of Matthew 4:17-19; Mark 1:15-20; and Luke 5:1-11.
This print was issued & released in 2001.
